Million Women Mentors at NPC

National Park College will host a Million Women Mentors event Wednesday at 10 a.m. in the Martin Eisele Auditorium of the Frederick M. Dierks Center for Nursing and Health Sciences.

The event is free and open to the public.

Million Women Mentors is a nationwide movement to support the engagement of 1 million male and female mentors in the fields of science, technology, engineering and mathematics to mentor girls from school age to work age and help encourage them to persist and succeed in STEM programs and careers by the year 2019.

Wal-Mart is partnering with STEMConnector and Lt. Gov. Tim Griffin to launch the initiative in Arkansas. Griffin will deliver the keynote address about he importance of mentoring.

Speakers will include Kelli Albrecht, NPC vice president for workforce and strategic initiatives; Alanah Claybaugh, a student at the Arkansas School for Mathematics, Sciences, and the Arts; Andrea Roberts, senior manager of STEM strategy for Wal-Mart; and Rebekah Robinette, instructor of microbiology, anatomy and physiology at NPC.

STEM-related employment is projected to increase to more than 8.5 million jobs by 2020, leaving more than 3 million STEM roles potentially unfilled. Women represent about half the professional workforce, but only 25 percent of the current STEM workforce.
