Man charged with felony after allegedly selling stolen property

A Benton man was arrested Monday after allegedly selling property stolen last year from a local business.

Michael G. Curtis, 58, was taken into custody shortly after 1 p.m. and charged with commercial burglary, a felony punishable by up to 10 years in prison. He remained in custody Tuesday in lieu of $3,500 bond and is set to appear Feb. 22 in Garland County District Court.

According to the affidavit, on Oct. 16, the victim reported a commercial burglary at Bump Chair Shop, 1538 Brady Mountain Road. Two chain saws, a single barrel 12-gauge shotgun and 40 antique wood carving hand tools were reported stolen.

On Oct. 19, investigators were informed by a witness that there was a white Chevrolet pickup in the driveway of the shop. The plates were registered to a "Gary Kyle." A Mabelvale man told Garland County sheriff's investigators he believed he had purchased some of the stolen items. The victim later positively identified the items as his.

The following day, the buyer was shown lineup pictures and identified Gary Kyle and Curtis as the sellers.

• A Hot Springs man was arrested Monday after allegedly threatening to kill a woman, her mother and himself.

Rafael Benavides, 32, was taken into custody shortly after 6:30 p.m. at 152 Lloyd Lane and charged with assault on a family or household member, a felony punishable by up to six years in prison. He bonded out and is set to appear Feb. 22 in district court.

According to the affidavit, the victim advised during her lunch break she went home and found Benavides was angry over something from the previous night. Benavides allegedly slammed her hand in the door, kicked her leg, head-butted her and choked her.

She states he also pointed a gun at her before placing it under his chin and threatening to kill himself. Benavides also threatened to kill the victim's mother if she got involved.
