Red Wolves rout S. Alabama on Thomas' triple-double

MOBILE, Ala. -- Donte Thomas turned in the third triple-double in program history as the Arkansas State Red Wolves remained undefeated in Sun Belt Conference play with an 89-67 victory over South Alabama on Saturday at the Mitchell Center.

Thomas finished with 14 points, 11 asissts and 10 rebounds, shooting 7 of 10 from the field. The Red Wolves (6-7, 2-0) shot 70 percent from the second-half floor, blowing open a 35-33 halftime lead.

Anthony Livingston led the Red Wolves with 22 points and 11 rebounds, hitting 10 of 18 field goals. Devin Carter added 20 points on 7 of 13 floor shots, Sean Gardner scoring 12 points and Nouthoum Boccoum 10 points.

Ken Williams was South Alabama's lone double-digit scorer with a game-high 23 points. The Jaguars (5-8, 0-2) shot just 33.8 percent from the field while Arkansas State hit 54.1 percent.

In the women's game, Khadija Brown-Haywood had a career-high 25 points and 13 rebounds, leading the Red Wolves to a 68-53 triumph. Amanda Lawson added 20 points for Arkansas State (8-3, 2-0), which led 48-28 after three quarters before holding on in the fourth.

Arkansas State hosts Louisiana-Monroe on Thursday before hosting Louisiana-Lafayette on Saturday.

UALR-Troy

TROY, Ala. -- Arkansas-Little Rock's Trojans overcame a second straight slow start to defeat Troy 67-61 in Sun Belt Conference play Saturday at Trojan Arena.

UALR (12-1, 2-0) trailed by nine early in the game and was down 34-29 at halftime before coming back in the second. Marcus Johnson Jr. led the visiting Trojans with 22 points, Jalen Jackson adding 18. Maurius Hill pulled down 12 rebounds for UALR.

Jordan Varnado scored 18 to lead Troy (5-8, 0-2). Kelton Ford added 10 points.

The home Trojans came out victorious in the women's game, 78-71. Ashley Beverly Kelley led Troy (6-5, 1-1) with 30 points, Claresa Banks adding 13 and Caitlyn Ramirez 10.

Sharde Collins and Kaitlyn Pratt led UALR (3-8, 1-1) with 17 points apiece, Monique Townson adding 12 and Shanity James 10. Both teams shot better than 50 percent from the floor.
