Rams win tourney opener, then muster one hit in loss

SHERIDAN -- Lakeside managed only a leadoff single by Jack Bornhoft in a 6-0 loss to Morrilton in the second round of the American Legion Class AA baseball tournament here Saturday.

"We weren't disciplined at the plate today and overall didn't play good baseball," said Lakeside coach Trennis Grant, whose team faced an elimination game Saturday night "We had no confidence and really had no fight in us late in the game."

Bornhoft pitched a one-hitter for three innings before allowing five walks in Morrilton's five-run fourth, Jason Hill with a two-run single and Dylan Wilson driving in a run. Ryan Andrews homered in the seventh.

Grant refused to blame the 100-degree heat for his team's effort. "It's baseball so everybody is playing in the hottest time of the year," he said. "They played in the same elements on the other side. They just made plays today and we didn't."

Winning pitcher Rustin Hays walked one and struck out six in four innings. Bornhoft allowed five runs on three hits, walking six and recording two strikeouts.

Friday night, Race Tittle pitched six innings as Lakeside cruised to a 7-1 win over River Valley.

"What we want to do on the mound is exactly what Race did," Grant said. "We want him to throw strikes and he threw strikes. They got a few hits but our defense was always in position to make the play."

The Rams led 2-1 after three innings, Tittle and Zac Melugin each with one RBI. Lakeside scored five runs on two hits over the last three innings, scoring two runs each on walks and wild pitches and another on a throwing error.

"We were patient and comfortable at the plate and on the bases," Grant said. "We took what the pitcher was giving us and then made them pay when they made mistakes."

Tittle finished with two RBI and Spencer Vicentic drive in one run, scored another and had a single. Eight of Lakeside's nine starters reached base safely.

Hayden Fennett plated the only run for River Valley with an RBI groundout in the third inning. Zac Dillard took the loss, surrendering six runs on three hits with 12 walks and five strikeouts in four innings.
