National education report features math, science school

The Arkansas School for Mathematics, Sciences, and the Arts was recently featured by Education Week in a report that explored the use of technology in American classrooms.

The 2016 edition of Education Week's "Technology Counts" report aimed to reveal how teachers approach integrating technology into the classroom and their confidence in education technology. More than 50 percent of teachers in the report said they felt comfortable using new technologies, but most teachers do not use technology for test-taking and drills rather than more interactive or collaborative approaches.

Among the stories featured in the report is one on Arkansas' computer science education efforts, including ASMSA's Coding Arkansas' Future initiative, which includes the teacher education program to prepare faculty members across the state to teach computer science classes at their schools.

"As the applications for technology in the classroom continue to evolve, it's important to understand how teachers are using technology to teach and what factors they consider when deciding which products to use," said Kevin Bushweller, executive project editor of "Technology Counts." "With the right support and understanding, there is a lot of room for growth in the area of education technology."
