GC Audubon to meet Thursday

Garland County Audubon Society will meet at 7 p.m. Thursday at Westminster Presbyterian Church, 3819 Central Ave. The public is welcome.

Jack Stewart will present a program on "Many Happy Days I've Squandered Part 2," about natural history books and the adventures they spawned. He will begin in a run-down used bookstore on the shady side of town where a discovery among the musty shelves of that store led to a lifetime of birding adventures from the Appalachian Mountains to the rain forests of New Guinea.

In retirement, Stewart has only partially settled down to living in a solar electric home in the Arkansas Ozarks with his naturalist wife, Pam. He serves on the Board of Directors of the National Audubon Society, is education co-chair for the Arkansas Audubon Society and vice president of the Buffalo River Watershed Alliance.

Ikebana class Thursday at GC Library

Hot Springs Ikebana, the art of Japanese flower design, welcomes all to an intermediate class at Garland County Library from 1-3 p.m. Thursday. The beginner's lesson will be Book 1, Lesson 5. The advanced work will be Book 3, Lesson 13, of Sogetsu School, emphasizing massed flowers.

Each participant will furnish their own containers, fresh flowers, branch material, flower pin frogs (kenzans), clippers (hasami), a small bowl for cutting stems underwater, branch materials, etc. Beginners can borrow containers with a request by Thursday. A critique is a crucial part of the ikebana class and all students are asked to remain until each design has been discussed and assist in cleanup
