Simpson is a U.S. Army veteran of the Vietnam War. He was one of 40 U.S. Armed Forces veterans who participated in the event, which is a precursor to the AFF's annual fundraiser. AFF is a nonprofit organization that assists veterans in the state through rehabilitative and sporting events.

Members of the Professional Golfers' Association were paired with the 40 veterans who attended, and worked in three groups. In addition to work on the driving range, participants got lessons in chip shots and on the putting green. Each was also able to enjoy lunch before outdoor activities began.
