Malvern resident Charlie Simpson, left, gets instruction on his driving swing from Professional Golfers' Association member Dawn Darter during a clinic put together by the Arkansas Freedom Fund, held Monday at Diamante Golf Course. Simpson is a U.S. Army veteran of the Vietnam War. He was one of 40 U.S. Armed Forces veterans who participated in the event, which is a precursor to the AFF's annual fundraiser. Slots are still open for participants in the sixth annual Freedom Golf Scramble, set for May 16. Those interested can sign up online at http://www.ArkansasFreedomFund.org. AFF is a nonprofit organization that assists veterans in the state through rehabilitative and sporting events.

Members of the Professional Golfers' Association were paired with the 40 veterans who attended, and worked in three groups. In addition to work on the driving range, participants got lessons in chip shots and on the putting green. Each was also able to enjoy lunch before outdoor activities began.
