Ferrando's groundbreaking program is showing the ability of specially trained dogs to assist physicians in the actual diagnosis of cancer's presence. Initial efforts have focused on the difficult diagnosis of thyroid cancer, and planned future efforts will be dedicated to detecting cancers including ovarian, breast and prostate.

Prior to this endeavor, the majority of Ferrando's career has centered around the preservation of skeletal muscle, in particular, the use of pharmacological and nutritional interventions to ameliorate muscle loss. His work has spanned investigations during space flight, kidney disease, heart failure, born injury, trauma, post-surgical rehabilitation, and aging. Much of this study focuses on optimal nutritional and protein intake, and he holds a patent on a nutritional formulation.

Ferrando is a professor of geriatrics at the Center for Translational Research in Aging and Longevity, Little Rock.

General admission tickets are $12, and can be purchased online at http://www.hsvpoa.org.
