Small price to pay

Dear editor:

A recent letter beat up Sen. Sample for daring to support a small increase in our gas tax to improve our roadways. This movement of no new taxes, more tax breaks for the wealthy, and cutting back environmental laws will lead us to a society that looks like the Majestic Hotel remains.

A 5-cent-per-gallon increase, on an average 12-gallon purchase, is small, especially considering our new, much lower, worldwide oil prices. Bigger users would buy/pay more; they wear down the roads more. Common sense, cooperation and good ideas should be encouraged in our state Legislature.

P.S. Companies raising prices happen every day, for any reason they dream up; they just call them fees. How many of these companies dropped their increases and fees when the fuel cost plummeted?

P.S.2. Many of those $100K-plus Arkansas state salaries (not MDs) are political appointees.
