ATU to award credit for IB diploma

RUSSELLVILLE -- Arkansas Tech University is now the first Arkansas university to award two years' credit to students who have graduated with an International Baccalaureate diploma.

Hot Springs High School is one of five secondary schools in the state to offer the IB Diploma Programme. The others are Bentonville, Mount Saint Mary Academy, North Little Rock and Springdale. IB reports for the May 2015 school year showed 427 diploma candidates in Arkansas with an average diploma score of 25.05.

"Until now, no university within the State of Arkansas has an established IB Diploma policy," said Shauna Donnell, director of admissions and assistant vice president for enrollment at Arkansas Tech. "However, they do practice individual credit policies. Arkansas Tech University's initiative matches IB Diploma policies offered in many other states, like Texas."

Starting this summer, students who successfully complete the IB Programme, with a minimum score of four on each examination, will be granted 24 semester credit hours of undergraduate general education courses at Arkansas Tech. Arkansas Tech may grant fewer than 24 semester credit hours if the student receives a score of less than four on an examination administered as part of the Programme.
