Name calling vs. actualities

Dear editor:

Referring to an accusation by a letter writer in Sunday, Sept. 25, 2016, The Sentinel-Record, a friend suggested that I convey the definition of "name calling," which I have done for the benefit of the misinformed writer. Name calling: the use of offensive names, especially to win an argument or to induce rejection or condemnation (as of a person or project) without objective consideration of the facts (definition from Merriam-Webster -- dictionary since 1828).

Having read and reread my letter of Sept. 19, I find no evidence of name calling. Did the faultfinder read carefully what I wrote? I did refer to "Trump's rudeness, name calling and irresponsible, reckless proclamations." Yes. That comment was based on observations, not calling him names.

I wonder: Does Trump's calling people by insults qualify for name calling or is he exempt? Examples of his unbridled talent as a name-caller are: "murderers," "rapists," "crooked Hillary," "Lyin' Ted," "Little Marco," "Pocahontas and goofy" (referring to Elizabeth Warren), "low-class slob," "dummies." For women, he had his choice references to insult us: "sluts," "fat pigs," "dogs," "slobs," "disgusting animals," "bimbo," "gold diggers" and many other offensive labels, too numerous to name here. Shocking name calling, isn't it? Do you think that kind of bullying tactics will stop if he steps into the Oval Office? No.

No doubt the Clinton Foundation, an apolitical organization, has benefited from the Clintons' concern for others. The Clintons are not paid by the foundation. During her work as secretary of state, Clinton was not involved in the foundation. Millions of people in this world, here and abroad, have been helped by that foundation. The Clintons have worked to promote partnerships that have improved the lives of over 435 million people in more than 180 countries.

I don't have time to waste trying to straighten the record for all the innuendos and claims in that letter.

So, having tried to set the record straight about name calling versus actualities, my name is now being called to help elect Secretary of State Hillary Clinton for president. I vote for qualified candidates.
