Classmates, students, friends and family members participated in a balloon release on Monday to honor the memory of a Cutter Morning Star student who was fatally injured in a vehicle crash on Sept. 18.

The single-vehicle crash that took the life of Kera Michelle Moreno, 9, occurred on Highway 70 east, a short distance from the campus.

They all gathered together on the school's football field on Monday, which would have been her 10th birthday, to release balloons in her favorite colors prior to the kickoff of a peewee football game.

Nancy Anderson, CMS superintendent, provided the newspaper with a copy of what was said at the remembrance:

"Kera Michelle Moreno left a very big hole in our hearts where her big hugs, infectious smile, and kind spirit used to be.

"Kera was a helper to so many people, and we will always miss her. However, today would have been her 10th birthday! We want to celebrate the life she led and the mark she left on our lives. Kera had gone to school here since kindergarten. In those years, her wild blonde hair and happy personality filled our halls with her special joy. In honor of her birthday, fourth-grade students will release balloons in her favorite colors, turquoise, purple and pink. Classmates, friends, and family members will also release white balloons.

"Please join us, as we celebrate Kera's 10th birthday by finding ways to be kind and warm to others around you. As we play 'Dancin' in the Sky' please release your balloon when ever you would like."

After the song played, it said, "Happy birthday, Kera. We're sure gonna miss you."
