Benton's Harris to receive

Sporty Carpenter Award

Benton head football coach Brad Harris has been named as the recipient of the 2017 Sporty Carpenter Award.

The award, which is named for long-time Henderson State University football coach Sporty Carpenter, is presented to a former Reddie football player or Henderson alum who has pursued a career in coaching football and has exemplified excellence on and off the field. This year's award will be presented during halftime of the 16th Annual Sporty Bowl, HSU's annual spring football game, which will be held on Saturday, April 8, at Carpenter-Haygood Stadium at 11 a.m.

Harris was a linebacker for the Reddies in 1989 and 1990, and he led the Panthers to the 2016 Class 6A state semifinals in his first year as head coach. He was defensive coordinator when the Panthers reached the 2015 state semifinals and were the 2014 state runners-up.

Harris earned Class 1-4A Coach of the Year honors in 2013 while also earning Northwest Arkansas Media, KURM Dream Team and Channel 5 News Coach of the Year accolades. Harris was also a finalist for Hooten's Coach of the Year in 2011 and 2013.

Harris also led the Lincoln Wolves from 2008-2014, taking them from a 29-game losing streak when he started to an 11-win season in 2013. He also coached the Arkadelphia Badgers from 1998-2008, serving as head coach from 2003 before leaving to head the Wolves.

This year's Sporty Bowl will consist of four 12-minute quarters, with both teams playing under modified rules and limited offensive and defensive schemes.

Fans will have the opportunity to meet the coaches and players following the game.
