GAC volleyball tourney starts today

Undefeated Arkansas Tech plays in the third of four games scheduled today in the first round of the Great American Conference volleyball tournament.

Bank of the Ozarks Arena is host again to the three-day event, with semifinals Friday and the championship match at 2 p.m. Saturday.

Arkansas Tech is 32-0 with half its games in the GAC's double round-robin. Coming off a five-game match at home against Ouachita Baptist, the Golden Suns play No. 8 seed Southeastern Oklahoma (13-19) at 5 p.m.

The noon opener pits No. 3 seed Oklahoma Baptist (17-14) against No. 6 Ouachita (19-11), followed at 2:30 p.m. by No. 2 seed Harding (25-5) against No. 7 Southwestern Oklahoma (13-19). Today's final match, set for 7:30 p.m., matches the Nos. 4 and 5 seeds, Northwestern Oklahoma (20-10) and Southern Nazarene (14-17).

Southern Nazarene (Bethany, Okla.) is defending GAC tournament champion, winning 3-0 matches against Southeastern Oklahoma in the final and Henderson and Ouachita in earlier rounds last year.

Jessieville freshman scores 11 for Harding

SEARCY -- Freshman Kellie Lampo, of Jessieville, scored 11 points off the bench as Harding defeated Missouri Southern 65-63 Tuesday night at Rhodes-Reaves Fieldhouse.

Lampo went four of six from the field and had seven rebounds in 19 minutes for the Bisons (1-2).

Caroline Hogue led with 21 points and Sydney Layrock had 10 points for Harding, which trailed 33-31 at halftime but led 54-50 after three quarters. Peyton Padgett's basket in the paint with 1:27 left broke a 63-all tie.

Harding lost 83-78 to Northern State and 78-67 to Concordia-St. Paul in a weekend tournament in Kansas City, Mo. Lampo had 12 points, making eight of nine free throws, against Concordia-St. Paul after three points in the Bisons' opener Friday.

Harding's first Great American Conference game is today at Southeastern Oklahoma (Durant).
