World War II veterans honored at luncheon

Although they never served together, four war World War II veterans at the Montgomery Country Assisted Living facility in Mount Ida have a special camaraderie with one another.

Sitting at a special decorated table in MCAL, the veterans told the tales of their time in war. "All had a twinkle in their eyes and held their heads high and with pride," states the press release. And in each of their rooms, they have mementos from their past, including pictures more than 70 years old of themselves in service which were displayed at the luncheon.

MCAL honors its residents who served in the military every year on Veterans Day. This year they welcomed USD 1812 to assist. Members of the Baseline-Meridian Chapter United States Daughters of 1812 traveled to Mount Ida to thank the four veterans and present them with gifts. The Daughters had the opportunity to have conversations with them individually.

USD 1812 held or assisted in weeklong activities for veterans. Beginning on Nov. 4 with a Vietnam Veteran Era Reception and luncheon, they then placed 900 flags on the graves of veterans. A dedication of grave marker for a War of 1812 veteran was held on Veterans Day and recognition was given to his descendants present who also served in later wars and finally USD 1812 presented flag lapel pins to 69 veterans on Nov. 12. Members took part in Veterans Day parades and ceremonies around the state.
