Chapel stops Rams, 21-7

Playing for its third 5A-South championship in as many years, Lakeside's potent offense was held in check by Watson Chapel Friday night at Austin Field.

Averaging 38 points per game in conference play, the Rams were shut out in the second half and held to a season-low 216 yards in a 21-7 loss.

Trailing 21-7, Lakeside marched deep into Watson Chapel territory on its first drive of the fourth quarter. After a 43-yard gain by Dupree Swanson, the Rams faced fourth and goal from the three.

Taylor Gilhham's pass attempt was intercepted by Watson Chapel's Javeon Jackson, securing the win and conference championship for the Wildcats.

Leading 13-7, Watson Chapel forced a quick three-and-out on Lakeside's first offensive possession of the third quarter. Dejuan Harris broke loose for a 53-yard touchdown three plays later, Omar Allen adding the two-point conversion to make it 21-7.

After a scoreless first quarter, Watson Chapel quarterback Devin Curry capped a five-play drive with a five-yard touchdown pass to Dedetron Parks on third down. Following a three-and-out possession by Lakeside, the Wildcats extended their lead with a 70-yard drive and a four-yard rushing score by Allen.

The Rams blocked the extra-point attempt, but Watson Chapel maintained a 13-0 lead with 3:13 remaining in the first half.

Lakeside rode the legs of senior Swanson to scored in the final minute of the second quarter. Swanson broke loose for a 56-yard gain and rumbled for a four-yard score four plays later as the Rams pulled within 13-7.

Swanson finished with 187 yards while Gilham completed three of five pass attempts, Carson Muldoon with a 23-yard reception. Curry ran for 42 yards and completed three of six pass attempts for 44 yards.

Lakeside (5-4, 5-1) closes the regular season against Hot Springs on Friday at Reese Memorial Stadium. With a win, the Rams would earn the No. 2 seed and a home game in the first round of the Class 5A playoffs.
