Brown averages 25 points in pair of Eagle victories

Cutter Morning Star junior guard Ryan Brown scored 27 points on Thursday and 23 points on Friday as the Eagles picked up a pair of road wins.

Brown was only 5-for-15 shooting from the floor on Friday, but he made 12 of 15 free throw attempts and made six steals in a 61-48 win for Cutter Morning Star (6-4, 1-1 2A-5) against conference opponent Maumelle Charter (6-7, 0-3).

The Falcons led, 14-10, after the opening quarter, but the Eagles surged ahead for a 25-21 lead at halftime. The visitors pulled away for a 41-31 lead to start the fourth quarter as they outscored the home team, 36-27, in the second half.

"We got off to a slow start, but played strong down the stretch defensively and in rebounding to pull away for the win," said Cutter Morning Star head boys' basketball coach Matt Carter.

Junior forward Colby Heaton scored nine points on 4-for-6 shooting and finished with a team-high 15 rebounds. Sophomore Keshawn Blevins scored eight points, while Mitchel Herron and Rhett Barrett each scored five, Barrett dishing out five assists.

Brown was 8-for-13 Thursday, including 3-for-3 on 3-pointers, for 27 points, five rebounds and four assists in a 72-55 victory as Haskell Harmony Grove (5-5). The Eagles shot 22-for-49, 44.9, percent overall and 9-for-20, 45 percent, on 3-pointers to win by 17 points despite shooting just 55.9 percent, 19-for-34 on free throws.

Cutter Morning Star raced away for the win by outscoring Harmony Grove, 24-4, in the final quarters. The Cardinals were ahead, 21-17, to start the second quarter and held a 35-30 advantage after the first half. The Eagles trailed, 51-48, to start the fourth quarter.

"We played solid defense down the stretch to pull away for the win," Carter said. "I thought we played well throughout the game in all phases."

Barrett scored 14 points with three assists, while Heaton scored 10 points and grabbed eight rebounds. Junior Chris Kennedy added six points with seven rebounds.

Cutter Morning Star has another road conference matchup today at Magnet Cove (8-2, 3-0).

Girls

The Cutter Morning Star senior high girls also earned a conference win on Friday, 37-15, against Maumelle Charter.

Junior Kara Kinkaid led all players with 12 points and classmate C.J. Burks scored 11. Junior Haley Scott added four points.

The Lady Eagles (3-7, 1-1) led, 7-3, after the opening quarter and both teams doubled their scores by halftime for a 14-6 margin. The Lady Falcons (2-7, 0-3) were held to just one point in the third quarter for a 24-7 deficit to start the final frame.

Cutter Morning Star is scheduled for another road game today at Magnet Cove (5-5, 1-2).

* Freshman Selena Gasca scored 23 points Friday as Cutter Morning Star's junior high girls defeated Maumelle Charter, 41-24.

Freshman Kendyll Knott-Debord scored eight points, eighth-grader Laila Elliot scored five points and seventh-grader Stormie Cudvat added four points.
