Red Devils edge Maumelle Charter

MAUMELLE -- Entering the contest with an average margin of victory of 27 points per game, Mountain Pine's senior boys found themselves in a dogfight Friday night at Maumelle Charter.

Trailing 32-27 at the half, the Red Devils (15-3, 5-0) outscored Maumelle Charter (14-11, 5-3) 23-19 in the third quarter and 16-15 in the fourth to secure a 67-64 win.

Mountain Pine led 14-12 at the end of the first quarter, but the Falcons rebounded with a 20-12 advantage in the second quarter to take a five-point lead at the half.

Senior guard Fay Haywood paced the Red Devils with 23 points, while senior big man Tyler Zander added 15 points. Junior forward Josh Walpole recorded a double-double with 12 points and 10 rebounds.

Mountain Pine hosts crosstown rival Cutter Morning Star (10-6, 3-3) Tuesday night. The Red Devils won the previous matchup, 68-41, on Dec. 12 at Eagle Fieldhouse.

Girls

In the midst of a five-game losing streak, the Lady Red Devils got back on track with a 53-28 win over host Maumelle Charter Friday night.

Mountain Pine (4-11, 2-3) held a 24-14 lead at the half after identical 12-7 advantages in the first and second quarters. Maumelle Charter (4-18, 0-3) scored nine points in the third quarter, but the Lady Red Devils dropped 17 points of their own to take a commanding 41-23 lead entering the final frame.

With the game all but over, Mountain Pine outscored the Lady Falcons 12-5 in the fourth quarter to set the final margin.

Senior forward Summer Godwin racked up 21 points, eight rebounds and four assists for the Lady Red Devils. Freshman guard Kalariya McDaniel recorded 16 points with three steals and two blocks.

Senior guard Ali Meeks had seven points and four rebounds off the bench. Senior forward Grace Galarza finished with four points, three steals and a team-high 10 rebounds.

The Lady Red Devils host Cutter Morning Star (11-7, 3-1) Tuesday night, looking to avenge a 36-29 loss on Dec. 12 at Eagle Fieldhouse.
