LAKE CATHERINE -- Performing songwriter Kerry Grombacher will appear in a free concert at the Lake Catherine State Park amphitheater at 7:30 p.m. June 30.

In the spirit of the troubadours of old, Grombacher performs contemporary folk and western songs that are set in the landscape he travels, from the bayous of Louisiana, through the desert Southwest, to the hi-line of Montana and the forests of Oregon, where he fought fires for the U.S. Forest Service, a news release said. He is sponsored by Elixir Guitar & Mandolin Strings and has performed a concert at Lake Catherine State Park each year since 1999.

In the course of his nationwide tours, Grombacher has performed his songs on stages as varied as the Newport Folk Festival in Rhode Island, Cowboy Songs & Range Ballads in Wyoming, the New Orleans Jazz & Heritage Festival in Louisiana and the Durango Cowboy Poetry Gathering in Colorado. In addition to appearances at folk festivals and cowboy gatherings, he performs regularly at coffee houses, house concerts and other music venues and he has been featured on "River City Folk," the folk music interview program that is heard across the country on public radio stations.

Grombacher's most recent album of western songs is "It Sings in the Hi-Line." His earlier recordings are "Sands Motel," "Riding for the Brand," "Dreams of New Orleans" and "Home to the West." Grombacher's songs have been recorded by other western music artists, including Belinda Gail, Jim Jones, The Texas Trailhands, Ed Stabler, Duke Davis, Gary Prescott, Trails & Rails and Earl Gleason, and he has a song on the children's album "Cowboy Playground," released in the United States and 60 foreign countries in 2012 by the Putumayo World Music/Putumayo Kids record label.

Nalini Jones, of the Newport Folk Festival, said in the release, "Kerry Grombacher is the best kind of songwriter, with lyrics that take us on journeys to places we've never visited before, and melodies so pure and true that they seem to rise up from the plains."
