Lakeside sets season high in hits

CAMDEN -- Lakeside's potent offense was on full display at Camden Fairview Tuesday night.

Averaging nine runs per game, the Rams erupted for a season-high 17 hits in a 14-5 rout of the Cardinals (2-6, 1-2 5A/6A-6) to improve to 8-1 overall and 3-0 in conference.

Lakeside started hot with five runs in the top of the first inning, but Fairview answered with two runs in each of the first two frames and knotted the score at 5-5 with a run in the bottom of the third.

The Rams regained the lead with two runs in the top of the fourth and added an insurance run in the sixth before breaking the game open with a six-run seventh inning.

Zac Melugin and Ben Muldoon each had three singles and two RBIs for the Rams, while Ethan Cevela finished with two singles, one double and three RBIs in four at-bats. All nine Lakeside starters recorded at least one base hit.

Ethan Bates pitched four innings, allowing one run on three hits with no walks and six strikeouts.

Hunter Morgan suffered the loss for the Cardinals, surrendering seven runs on 10 hits with five walks and four strikeouts. Fairview's Javion Hegwood doubled and had two RBIs in three at-bats.

Scoring 11 runs or more in each of its last four games, Lakeside hosts Magnolia (6-1, 3-0) today in a battle for conference supremacy.

LAKE HAMILTON-EL DORADO

PEARCY -- First-year El Dorado coach Cannon Lester was right at home in Garland County Tuesday night.

The former Lakeside assistant led the Wildcats to a 6-2 win at Lake Hamilton (1-7, 0-1, 5A/6A-6) improving to 8-0 in his first season at the helm.

After three scoreless innings, El Dorado struck for three runs in the top of the fourth to take an early lead. The Wolves plated one run in the bottom of the frame, but the Wildcats added one run in the sixth and two in the seventh to secure the win.

Spencer Gracie had two hits in four at-bats for the Wolves, while Utah Aitken and Weston Dobyns each drove in one run. Junior Cole Plyler allowed three runs on three hits with three walks and four strikeouts in 3 1/3 innings pitched.

El Dorado starter Zach Morgan earned the win with one run allowed on three hits, walking three and striking out two in 4 2/3 innings.

Micah Haney and Daniel Johnson each delivered one RBI for the Wildcats, while Derek Jobe blasted a two-run home run in the top of the seventh.

In the midst of a five-game losing streak, Lake Hamilton travels to Texarkana today.

GAC NOMINATION

ARKADELPHIA -- Henderson State junior Zach Eschberger was among the nominees this week when the Great American Conference announced the sixth weekly awards for the baseball season.

Eshberger (3-0) recorded his third complete game of the season and gave up one run to Arkansas Tech (12-9, 7-5) in a 6-1 for the Reddies (13-9, 8-4).

The GAC Baseball Pitcher of the Week was David Gustafson, a senior at Southern Nazarene. The other nominees were Bryce Deatherage, junior, Southeastern Oklahoma State; Isaac Hale, junior, Arkansas Tech; Michael Harrison, senior, Arkansas-Monticello; Cole Jackson, junior, Northwestern Oklahoma State; Hunter Vasquez, senior, Southern Arkansas; Jackson Ward, senior, Harding; and Mychal Yarbor, senior, Oklahoma Baptist.

CERTIFIED ATHLETIC ADMINISTRATOR

PEARCY -- The National Interscholastic Athletic Administrators Association announce this week Rick Waters, Lake Hamilton School District athletic director, has been recognized as a certified athletic administrator.

To earn the distinction, Waters demonstrated knowledge and expertise in the field of interscholastic athletic administration. The voluntary certification process included an evaluation of the candidate's educational background, experience and professional contributions, as well as a written examination.

The NIAAA is a national professional organization consisting of all 50 state athletic administrator associations and more than 10,000 individual members. The association works to promote the professional growth of high school athletic administrators and preserve the educational nature of interscholastic athletics and the place of the programs in the secondary school curriculum.

HIGH SCHOOL SOCCER

LAKESIDE-TEXARKANA

Lakeside overcame an early goal by Texarkana Tuesday night as the Lady Rams held on to defeat the Lady Razorbacks after penalty kicks.

Texarkana (0-4, 0-2 5A/6A-6) scored early in the first half, leaving the Lady Rams (5-4, 3-0) playing from behind much of the game. Emi Kijser scored the equalizer for the Lady Rams with 10 minutes remaining, putting the ball in the back of the net off a cross from the right corner.

With the game tied after regulation, the teams resorted to penalty kicks to determine the winner.

Taylor Ramirez had the first kick from the spot, getting the ball past the keeper, but Tarin Delong's shot went wild. Ashley Gayle and Kiley Hermosillo shot third and fourth, both scoring goals to secure the win.

Lakeside goalkeeper Jessica Bishop finished with 10 saves on the night, including one save in the shootout.

The Lady Rams will travel to Texarkana for a rematch on March 27 for their next game.

HOT SPRINGS-HOPE

HOPE -- Hot Springs managed to prevail over Hope Tuesday night after the teams resorted to penalty kicks to determine the outcome.

Trailing 1-0 at halftime after Hope (2-3, 0-2 5A/6A-6) scored on a penalty kick, the Trojans (5-2, 3-0) managed to outscore the Bobcats 2-1 in the second half to force a shootout.

Josue Hernandez scored the first goal for the Trojans in the half, and Jack Selig lasered the ball into the upper corner on a kick from outside the box to knot the score at 2-2.

Hot Springs scored on four of their penalty kicks, Hope made one as the Trojans held on for the win.

The Trojans had 22 shots to the Bobcats' five and had four corner kicks to the home team's one.

Hot Springs will host De Queen (6-2, 3-0) in a conference match tonight at Joe Reese Memorial Stadium.

HOT SPRINGS-EL DORADO

Johnathan Aquino led Hot Springs to a 4-0 victory over the visiting El Dorado Wildcats Friday night at Reese Memorial Stadium.

Aquino picked up a hat trick in the match, scoring three of the four goals. He scored the only goal in the first half as the Trojans took a 1-0 lead into the break.

The senior midfielder put the ball in the back of the net twice more in the second half for the hat trick, and Johnny Vasquez scored a goal late in the half to set the final.

Junior Jack Selig dominated the midfield for the Trojans. Derrick Chambers and Johnathan Altamirano recorded the clean slate for the Trojans.
