Arkansas USD 1812 attends national council

The Arkansas Society United States Daughters of 1812 recently sent a delegation of five to the 127th Associate Council held in Washington, D.C.

The three-day event is held every year to conduct business of the National Society as well as giving recognition to those states and chapters that have excelled in the purposes and goals of the society, a news release said.

The Arkansas State Society report was given by Kay Brakefield Tatum, who accepted, on behalf of the society, 25 awards acknowledging the exceptional work of Arkansas for veterans, historical preservation and literacy.

Mary Ellen Laursen, of Hot Springs Village, served as a page for the second year and received an award for her service to veterans.

A memorial service was held for deceased members Margaret McGrew, of Hot Springs, and Dorothy Wilks, of Stuttgart.
