Burek, Campas star in girls' joint conference swim meet

ARKADELPHIA -- Lakeside senior Nicole Burek and Hot Springs sophomore Emma Campas were the only representatives of Garland County to win events on Saturday at the joint conference meet for the 5A-South and 1A-4A South at Henderson State.

Magnolia won the overall girls' competition to take first place in the 1A-4A South. Benton placed second overall to take the 5A-South title.

The Lady Panthers had 473 points. Arkadelphia was a distant second in their conference at 193 points. Bauxite was third at 127 and Camden Fairview placed last at 58.

Benton won the 5A-South with 425 points, while El Dorado took second with 197. Lakeside, Hot Springs and Lake Hamilton rounded out the standings with 181 points, 127 and 65, respectively.

Burek won by more than 10 seconds in the 100-yard breaststroke. Her first-place time was 1:13.93 and Arkadelphia junior Sydney Moti placed second at 1:24.34. Senior Lady Badger teammate Colleen Lloyd was fifth at 1:31.46.

The Lakeside senior also won the 200-yard individual medley by an even larger margin with a time of 2:23.74. Magnolia sophomore Elizabeth Wilson was second at 2:45.76.

Lakeside's Lydia Cevela had the Lady Rams' next-best finishes. She was seventh in the 100-yard freestyle at 1:09.38 and eighth in the 50-yard freestyle at 30.55.

Campas won the 200-yard freestyle with a time of 2:20.60. Magnolia sophomore Natalie Boyd placed second at 2:30.60.

The Hot Springs sophomore earned second place in the 100-yard backstroke with a time of 1:11.87. Benton's Janie Lee won the event in 1:10.56.

Freshman Tillie Reagler gave the Lady Trojans their next-best finish with a fourth-place time of 1:17.18 in the event. Bauxite's Bailey Hunter was third at 1:14.18.

Lake Hamilton junior Kannyn Wasson gave the Lady Wolves their top two finishes. Wasson was 12th in the 100-yard freestyle at 1:18.67 and 13th in the 50-yard freestyle at 32.01.

Russellville won a bid last month to host the swimming and diving meet for Class 5A this year. The 5A state meet is scheduled for Feb. 22-23.

Moti was also fourth in the 100-yard freestyle with a time of 1:06.45. El Dorado senior Lorin Utsch won the event with a time of 58.78. Lloyd came in sixth at 1:09.16.

The Arkansas Activities Association is in the fourth-year of a five-year contract with Bentonville High School to hold the 1A-4A and Class 6A state meets in Bentonville. They will also be held Feb. 22-23.
