A local man on parole sought on a felony theft warrant for allegedly stealing a car earlier this year was arrested after reportedly fleeing the scene of a shooting Friday evening on Autumn Street.

Joseph Terrell Daniels, 29, who lists an Oakwood Street address, was taken into custody shortly before 4 p.m. Friday and charged with theft of property over $5,000, punishable by up to 10 years in prison, and misdemeanor resisting arrest, punishable by up to one year in jail.

Daniels was being held on zero bond and was set to appear Monday in Garland County District Court.

According to the probable cause affidavit, shortly after 3:30 p.m. Friday, Hot Springs police responded to the apartments at 231 Autumn St. regarding a shooting that had just occurred. (See related story Page One).

Officers made contact with Daniels who, according to bystanders at the scene, had fled the area immediately after the shooting. Daniels was located at the top of the stairs of the apartment complex between Autumn and Spring streets. It was determined Daniels had a parole hold warrant and the felony theft warrant.

Officers told Daniels he was under arrest and grabbed his hands to take him into custody. Daniels allegedly clenched his fists and "pulled away violently," taking a "fighting stance" until officers and National Park Service rangers displayed Tasers.

At that point, Daniels complied and was taken into custody. He was escorted to a police unit where he allegedly refused to get in the rear of the car and had to be forcibly placed in it.

According to the affidavit on the theft charge, on June 26, a woman reported the theft of her 2019 Nissan Versa from the parking lot at Hill Wheatley Plaza, 605 Central Ave., and noted she was also missing her car keys which she had on her earlier.

Officer Sam Spencer was able to locate the woman and her vehicle on the downtown camera system and saw where she sat down on a bench in the 600 block of Central Avenue and a man known to Spencer sat down next to her.

At one point, the woman stood up and appeared to drop a set of keys on the ground. She walked away and the man dropped his shirt over the keys and then bent down and picked his shirt and the keys up and walked away.

A short time later, a man, known to Spencer as Daniels, could be seen approaching the woman's car. He entered the car and drove out of the parking lot.

Spencer was able to backtrack on the camera system and found footage showing Daniels and the other man walking together downtown prior to the incident, with Daniels stealing the car about 15 minutes later.

Police located the other man who reportedly admitted to stealing the keys, but said he did not steal the car, which was reportedly valued at $16,300. A warrant for Daniels' arrest was issued on Aug. 9 after further investigation.
