Library to host adult spelling bee

The Garland County Library, 1427 Malvern Ave., will host a spelling bee for adults at 6 p.m. Tuesday in the library's auditorium.

Contestants are asked to register in advance and spectators are welcome. Visit http://www.gclibrary.com or go by the library in person to register. Call the Library at 501-623-4161 or email [email protected] for more information.

The first-place winner will receive a Samsung Galaxy tablet. The top three spellers will receive a custom spelling bee medal, and all participants will receive a participation prize.

The spelling bee, adapted from the Scripps National Spelling Bee rules, follows an unofficial, modified format meant to be more casual and beginner-friendly, a news release said.

Participants will continue to spell words in order until only one person successfully passes a round, and a champion can be declared. Each speller will have a brief time limit to respond.

"Each speller may request that the judges repeat the word's pronunciation, and/or give its definition, example in a sentence, or part of speech. Any misunderstanding of a word is the fault of the competitor. Word difficulty will range from everyday, but commonly misspelled words, to the most obscure depths of the dictionary," the release said.
