The Women's Welcome Club of Hot Springs, which has been giving scholarships to nursing students at National Park College for a number of years, was able to increase the number of scholarships awarded this year from six to 10, the club said in a news release.
A total of $10,000 in scholarships was awarded at its May 4 meeting.
The 10 recipients were honored at the meeting where each one had the opportunity to tell the membership a bit about themselves, the release said.
The recipients are selected by a panel of administrators from the school. National Park College was not aware of the increased number of awards until they submitted the names of the 10 finalists to be interviewed by the Scholarship Committee from Women's Welcome Club.
"When it was announced that every candidate would be receiving his/her scholarship, there were definitely smiles all around," the release said.
Women's Welcome Club, which was formed 60 years ago, will celebrate its 60th anniversary at its August meeting.
"Heretofore the restrictions on membership were one had to have a Hot Springs address and have lived here less than two years to qualify. This year, in celebration of the 60th Anniversary, those restrictions are being lifted," the release said.
The new parameters are 60th Anniversary, 60-day period of grace -- this includes the July and August meetings -- and an address within a 60-mile radius of Hot Springs, "as the crow flies."
