Where's Horace Greeley to lend advice to powers that be in college football?

A newspaper editor and the defeated Republican challenger to incumbent U.S. President Ulysses S. Grant in 1872, Greeley may be remembered most for his admonition to "Go West, young man, and grow up with the country."

Acting upon his advice, California became the most heavily populated state and whereas gold once was the alluring factor, thousands flocked in that direction seeking fame and fortune or, in the case of the Joad Family in John Steinbeck's American classic "The Grapes of Wrath," the prospect of a land overrunning with milk and honey. Hollywood beckoned to others and, like Dionne Warwick signs, "maybe in a day or two they'll make you a star.
